Keeping it local

Busy day today, in fact today was my most enjoyable day so far in Lockdown UK. It was a nice contrast to yesterday, when I was trapped indoors doing piles of admin. We don’t have clients at the moment, but basic survival seems to involve a lot of paperwork.

Anyway, I earned myself a morning bike ride and some time working in the garden this afternoon. Keen to keep it local, in line with government guidance, Wally and I pedalled southwards for about 10km before turning back and heading for home. It was glorious to feel the wind on our faces.

On the way home we stopped at Bay Stores in Whiting Bay. Its a lovely wee independent shop that serves the village with local food and interesting things that you can’t find in the “Big Co” supermarket in Brodick. The shop has set up an efficient system to minimise contact and risk in this strange time of COVID-19. They’ve set up the shop counter in the doorway, and stand behind it to take orders. Customers queue outside, 2m apart, and then yell our shopping list cheerily through the door when its our turn. The only tricky bit is sneaking up on the contactless machine to pay, arms outstretched, trying not to get too close.

We bought two nice-cold, ice-cold pints of local Arran Milk, and half a dozen local eggs, Very carefully carried back over the hill to our house in my bike pannier. This is a treat that I have missed.
